Power Issues in Coaching, Consulting and Leadership

Presented by Judith Blanton, PhD

Power is a complex and emotionally loaded concept in organizations. Consulting and I-O psychologists must deal with these issues on a daily basis and must use power and social influence to accomplish their objective of helping clients meet their goals. The presentation will discuss how leaders, coaches and consultants must grapple with power as professionals and also as individuals. It will summarize some of the classic research on power that categorizes various types of power--coercive, legitimate, reward, expert, referent, and informational--and how each type is manifest in the organizational setting. An additional type of power, mission-based power, will also be proposed. We will discuss the implications of various types of power in the work that coaches, consultants and leaders do and contrast this with the work of those who provide services to patients in clinical settings.

    Learning objectives:

    • Name at least four types of power relationships
    • Describe why having an understanding of one’s own power relationship is important for consulting and I/O psychologists
    • Identify two differences in power relations when working within organizational settings rather than within clinical settings
