Division V - Mission Statement

Expanded Access to Comprehensive Mental Health Care through prescriptive authority for psychologists, education, and development of standards of professional competence in psychopharmacology for California psychologists.

The Need for Prescribing Psychologists

  • Declining number of psychiatrists--a 36 % decrease 1992 – 2000
  • Underserved areas suffer most
  • 80% of psych meds already prescribed in primary care settings
  • Significant over-prescription, especially for children and elderly
  • The right to prescribe is the right to unprescribe.

A Reasonable Remedy

  • RxP trained psychologist prescribe safely in military, on reservations, and in two states
  • Primary care physicians want prescribing psychology colleagues
  • RxP training will increase psychology jobs in integrated care

But Won’t Psychology be medicalized?

  • Medication will be integrated into psychological treatment plans
  • Ethics and research guidelines help keep perspective on limitations of meds
  • Prescribing is but one of many treatment tools; behavior change is basic
  • Board of Psychology already recommends training for psychologists because of scope of practice
