CPAGS Committees

The work of CPAGS could not be done without the help of the committee members. Committees provide support to Executive Council members and help accomplish the day to day work that is so critical. Becoming a committee member is a great way to become involved with minimal time commitment. It's also a great stepping stone to running for an Executive Council position!

Advocacy Committee

Advocacy Chair: Amanda Eyges, MA

Advocacy: to change “what is” into “what should be.”The 2016-2017 CPAGS Advocacy Committee has a number of opportunities for learning and involvement in the advocacy process. Based on the advocacy chair’s love of collaborative work, the committee’s approach is to accomplish goals through combined energy, cooperative work, and encouragement of individual passions. The goals and areas of focus for 2016-17 are as follows:
  • continue increasing size/impact of advocacy events, SLAC and LAD
  • increase on-campus grass-roots advocacy activity through growth of Roots to Branches
  • increase advocacy education of graduate students through implementation of advocacy workshop by LACPA’s GAC into curriculum on multiple campuses
  • keep the CPAGS membership informed of current advocacy issues and opportunities for action
  • contribute 3 articles for publication in areas of passion for advocacy committee members.

As an advocacy Committee member you will have the opportunity to become an Advocacy Committee campus representative on your campus for increased involvement of advocacy activities, assist in planning and organizing advocacy events, help disseminate information, writing articles, as well as contributing to legislative action and building relationships with legislators. The Advocacy Chair believes it’s important for everyone to be involved, even if an individual can only make a small time commitment. As a committee member, individuals can decide on which area(s) and how much they can feasibly contribute. A little bit from enough people goes a long way!! Please join!!

Communications Committee

Communications Chair: Heidi Li, BS

The Communications Committee is comprised of the Communications Chair serving as Committee Chair, the CPAGS Chair, and any other members appointed by the Communications Chair.  The purpose of the committee is to serve as an educational resource for the membership, oversee the CPAGS website, and oversee all CPAGS member communications through the creation, revision and distribution of all marketing and membership materials.
Committee members will be actively involved in keeping content on the CPAGS website, Facebook page, and Twitter feed up to date and current. These are crucial tasks to keeping CPAGS members informed and up-to-date. Your ideas on how to connect students are welcome! Want to write and publish a blog about a topic of interest? Are there organizations or events in California you feel students should really know about? Do you have ideas for a video to promote CPAGS membership? How about a series of interviews with professionals in our field? The Communications Committee is the place to accomplish this and more!

Convention Committee

Convention Chair: Karen Rae Sanchez, MBA MT-BC

The Convention Committee is comprised of the Convention Chair serving as Committee Chair, the Chair, Past Chair, and at least one other CPAGS member appointed by the Convention Chair.  The purpose of the committee is to plan, coordinate and execute all aspects of graduate student issues and volunteer needs at the annual CPA convention.  The committee develops and oversees the call for Posters (in the fall), poster review and rating (in fall/winter), and all student programming at convention, including luncheons, poster presentations, exhibit hall, and any other graduate activities (including to assist the CPAGS Chair in executing the Annual Night Out, if needed).

Diversity Committee

Diversity Chair: Sean Rose, BM

The Diversity Committee is comprised of the Diversity Chair serving as Committee Chair, the Division VII Representative, and any other members appointed by the Diversity Chair. The committee plans, coordinates, and executes the annual spring CPAGS Cross-Cultural Conference that focuses on education, current research, and diversity concerns within the field of psychology. This conference is typically held in the spring, and should be held in Southern California in odd years (alternating from Southern California to Northern or Central California locations with the Student Leadership and Advocacy Conference held each academic year).

Membership Committee

Membership Chair: Kerry Horrel, BA

The Membership Committee is comprised of the CPAGS Chair serving as Committee Chair, Chair-Elect, and any other members appointed by the Committee Chair. This committee is responsible for initiating and monitoring recruitment and retention of members, reviewing all membership materials, reviewing and approving new members, making recommendations to the Executive Council for action, and making recommendations to the CPA Board regarding member benefits.

The membership committee is working on ways to increase the CPAGS membership. With the possible change to the CPAGS Bylaws to formally allow master's students into CPAGS, the Membership Committee will be tasked with rolling out a membership drive to attract master's students.

Fundraising Committee

Treasurer: Fredrick Edo, MA

The Fundraising Committee is comprised of the Treasurer serving as Committee Chair, Past Chair, and any other members appointed by the Committee Chair.  This committee oversees the fundraising and sponsorships raised for CPAGS.  The Committee Chair will report to and provide recommendations for the Executive Council’s approval. The committee shall abide by the rules and limitations that apply to all non-profit organizations and will work closely with CPA’s Liaison to CPAGS.

Social Justice Committee

Social Justice Chair: Sara Elliot, BA

The purpose of the Social Justice Committee shall be to further social justice initiatives both within the profession of psychology and further social justice initiatives within CPAGS.
