Division VIII Specialty Areas

Cultural Neuropsychology

Mission Statement

The mission of the Cultural Neuropsychology Subcommittee of CPA Division 8 is to advocate for more equitable neuropsychological assessment practices and treatment planning, to foster educational opportunities for the next generation of culturally and linguistically competent neuropsychologists, to promote scientifically rigorous research paradigms that are more inclusive and embrace diversity as a starting point, and to raise awareness of better brain health practices in the diverse communities we serve.

Vision Statement

The Cultural Neuropsychology Subcommittee of CPA Division 8 aims to achieve its mission by initially focusing on the following activities:

  • Outlining the need for a truly cultural neuropsychology given the emerging demographic changes of the United States, and California in particular, for professionals, trainees, and the community/public at large.
  • Creating a network of culturally and linguistically diverse service providers and training sites to better meet the needs of historically underrepresented communities in California with regard to neuropsychological assessment and rehabilitation.
  • Organizing and offering multiple training opportunities and CE coursework via seminars, workshops, online courses, web, and written formats with a focus on the interface of cultural practices and neurocognition to raise the bar for the discipline as a whole toward inclusivity and greater sophistication in incorporating cultural knowledge at all stages and phases of assessment and treatment.
  • Mentoring young investigators and clinicians interested in pursuing neurocognitive research and practice with historically underrepresented populations, as well as, identifying and pursuing funding sources to foster more research on cultural practices and neurocognition.
  • Providing education to the community/public that fosters better brain health via the prevention of neurological illness, injury, and pathology in culturally accessible ways with a focus on healthy lifestyle choices.
  • Providing linguistically and culturally appropriate information to the community regarding neuropsychological assessment in general and best practices with culturally diverse populations.
  • Advising and supporting CPA and APA committees concerned with advancing the interests of historically underrepresented populations and increasing the pipeline of culturally and linguistically prepared neuropsychologists.
